Audi 'composes' e-sound for e-tron electric cars

This could be what all cars will sound like in the future. Audi, the renowned German automobile company behind the R8 supercar, has been showcasing its concept hybrid and electric cars for a while now but hasn't quite gotten around one niggling issue: These cars can be awfully quiet.

Since pedestrians and cyclists are likely used to cars that make some engine noise, Audi has recruited a sound engineer to compose sounds for its future electric cars. Unlike regular automobiles that make use of explosive fuel, electric cars usually emit nothing more than tire noises, which mean you'll need an acute sense of hearing to avoid getting run over. By playing back a synthesized audio track that gets louder and more intense as the vehicle accelerates, Audi could be making these electric cars safer for people too, and not just the environment.

Watch the video to listen to the R8 e-tron in action. And, yes, it does sound like those electric cars from sci-fi movies. Could we be expecting customizable engine noises soon?
